How to Sell Supplements Online: Channels, Compliance & Strategy
The U.S. dietary supplement market generates over $60 billion annually, and e-commerce now accounts for roughly 40% of those sales — up from 25% just five years ago. Selling supplements online offers higher margins than retail, direct customer relationships, and the ability to scale with data-driven marketing. But it also comes with unique compliance challenges that can trip up unprepared brands. Here is how to do it right.
Choosing Your Sales Channels
Your Own Shopify Store (DTC)
A Shopify store is the foundation of most successful supplement brands. You control the customer experience, own the data, and keep the highest margins (no marketplace fees beyond payment processing at 2.4–2.9%). Essential features for a supplement Shopify store include subscription management (Recharge or Skio), a quiz funnel that recommends products based on health goals, detailed product pages with COA downloads, and robust review integration (Stamped or Judge.me).
The downside of DTC is that you are responsible for driving all your own traffic. Customer acquisition costs for supplements on Meta and Google run $25–$60 per new customer, so your unit economics need to support that.
Amazon
Amazon is where 60%+ of U.S. consumers start their product searches. For supplements, it offers massive reach but comes with significant trade-offs: referral fees of 8–15%, fierce price competition, and Amazon's additional compliance requirements for supplement listings. You will need to provide certificates of analysis, demonstrate cGMP compliance, and in some cases complete Amazon's third-party testing program (which costs $1,500–$5,000 per ASIN).
The strategic play is to use Amazon for discovery and volume while funneling customers to your DTC store for subscriptions and higher-margin repeat purchases.
TikTok Shop
TikTok Shop has become a major supplement sales channel, particularly for brands targeting consumers under 40. The combination of short-form video content and frictionless in-app checkout creates a powerful impulse-purchase environment. Supplement brands that work well on TikTok Shop include those with visible results (skin, hair, energy), strong creator partnerships, and competitive price points ($25–$45 range).
Compliance for Online Supplement Sales
Selling supplements online adds layers of compliance beyond what is required for the product itself:
- Advertising claims: The FTC regulates supplement advertising and requires that all claims be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence. This standard applies to your website copy, social media posts, influencer content, and paid ads.
- Platform-specific ad policies: Meta, Google, and TikTok all have supplement-specific advertising restrictions. Meta prohibits before/after images for supplements. Google requires LegitScript certification for some supplement categories. TikTok restricts claims about disease treatment.
- Structure/function claims: You can say "supports immune health" (a structure/function claim) but not "prevents colds" (a disease claim). Every product page and ad must navigate this distinction carefully. Always include the required FDA disclaimer: "These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."
- Auto-ship compliance: If you offer subscriptions, you must comply with the FTC's Negative Option Rule — clear disclosure of terms before checkout, easy cancellation, and confirmation emails.
Growth Strategy: From Launch to Scale
A phased approach works best for online supplement brands:
- Months 1–3 (Foundation): Launch your Shopify store, seed product to 30–50 micro-influencers, begin email list building through a health quiz or lead magnet, and start testing paid social creative on Meta.
- Months 3–6 (Optimization): Analyze your data to identify winning ad creative, optimize your conversion funnel, launch a subscription program, and expand to Amazon if DTC unit economics are healthy.
- Months 6–12 (Scale): Increase ad spend on proven campaigns, expand influencer partnerships, add TikTok Shop, launch new SKUs based on customer feedback, and explore wholesale opportunities with retailers.
Key Metrics to Track
- CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost): Target under $40 for a $50 average order value product
- LTV:CAC ratio: Aim for 3:1 or higher
- Subscription rate: 30–50% of customers should be on auto-ship within 6 months
- 60-day repurchase rate: 25%+ indicates strong product-market fit
- ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): Target 3x+ on Meta, 4x+ on Google for supplements
